The Ilex crenata blooms with inconspicuous white flowers followed by small black berries. It is an evergreen with noticeably small, dark green, convex and non spiny leaves.   The Japanese holly is very hardy, and has no special soil requirements Japanese holly is planted as a solitary, ideal for topiary.   The Ilex crenata lends itself to be pruned.
